Vick, Rodgers Look Great, Durant for MVP, LSU and more

Sports have officially returned and my god how great it is! College Football and LSU beating Vandy on Saturday, Giants in a pennant race, 49ers laying an egg in their opener,  Team USA winning gold in Turkey and Cowboys/Redskins going down to the wire on Sunday Night. Woo hoo! A long summer has been rewarded with a smorgashboard of sports, and i am loving every second of it.

Lets take a minute to get brought up to speed with my quick, random, and completely unrelated thoughts after a wild day in sports:

- Michael Vick looked real good in the Eagles near comeback win against Green Bay. I mean he's still got it; the legs, the arm, the athleticism, the whole package. He gave the Packers defense fits and if it weren't for a couple of poor routes by Desean Jackson, the Eagles could have pulled the upset. I really think this game propels Vick's stock heading into the upcoming offseason, especially if Kolb is out for an extended period of time. It is a reminder that Vick's value cannot be measured through statistics. You have to see it to understand it. I mean he was just demoralizing the Packers defenders. Every time they brought the blitz Vick would find a way to maneuver out of trouble, often picking up big gains in the process. There is a reason this guy took Atlanta to the NFC Championship a few years back, he is still a big time athlete and a big time Quarterback. And he will be available after the end of this year. Um, 49ers anybody?

- Also, going with the Packers/Eagles game, which i watched on TV while watching the 49ers on my laptop; I would like to personally slap whoever decided to draft Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers. How on gods green earth could someone in their right mind think Alex Smith was a better investment than Aaron Rodgers. Not now, not than, not ever! Rodgers is as cool as they come. Rocket arm, deadly accurate, agile in the pocket and an unflappable leader to boot, same as he was in college. I mean he only set a collegiate record 24 consecutive completions against top ranked USC, he only holds the single season passing record at CAL and he only was the top ranked Quarterback on every sinigle draft board except the 49ers. How is this possible!? He played right there in the 49ers very own backyard. He was right there. Right there!!! I mean literally RIGHT there!!! No more than a 30 minute drive from 49ers headquarters. Didn't Mike Nolan notice Rodgers name in the local headlines every Sunday Morning? Didn't he notice the buzz about the local kid, the one who grew up idolizing Montana and Young and was currently tearing up the PAC-10? It was the perfect story, the perfect time and the perfect place. And Mike Nolan dumped all over it. It kills me. It just kills me.

- Speaking of things to get excited about, get excited about these Giants baby! First place and on a roll. Lincecum is back, finally. Cain is still rolling and Huff, Burrell and Posey are providing enough offensive punch to keep the victory train moving. I have said it before and i will say it again, this team is special. There is some sort of unique chemistry in that clubhouse and it is spilling all over the wins column right now. If this team can claw its way into the playoffs it can really do some damage. Especially with that pitching staff. Go Giants.

- Did anybody watch the USA Basketball Gold Medal game against Turkey? No? Well if you missed it, I will bring you up to speed. KEVIN "I am unconscious 24/7" DURANT IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. Regards to Lebron and Kobe, but Durant is ridiculous. I mean he was pulling up for jumpers from 10 feet behind the 3PT line and making it look like it was nothing. It was ridiculous. While there is no place on the court where he can take a bad shot, the most impressive thing about KD's game is that it all comes within the flow of an offense. Unlike many of the NBA's modern day stars, KD can "get his" without disrupting the offensive rhythm. He scores off drive and kicks, ball reversals and fast breaks. He keeps the ball moving, attacks after the defense has shifted and is great at moving without the ball and utilizing screens. He is the ultimate offensive player. In my mind he is a mortal lock for NBA MVP with a legitimate opportunity to average a Jordan-esque 35 a game this season.

- Man Jon Gruden doesn't look quite right in that announcers booth. I mean that whole "chucky" scowl thing just doesn't fly when he is chumming it up with ESPN com padres. Which gets me to thinking; "Doesn't LSU need a new head football coach?"

- Speaking of LSU, why not Russell Shepard at Quarterback? I mean Jordan Jefferson sucks and Jarret Lee is one pick six away from a lifetime banishment from the state of Louisiana. Do you really want to put the security of your job into these guys hands Les? Did you forget that Shepard was the number one recruit in nation last year? Did you forget that he played Quarterback?

- More on Football Jesus, Russell Shepard. How awesome do you think he could be in Rich Rod's spread offense up in Michigan. If that dreaded up dude can get 300 total yards on Notre Dame, Shepard could have gotten 500. Heisman race over.

Thats all i got for now. NFL and SEC pick em standings will be posted soon. Check back soon, lots of new rants on the way including some NBA player scouting reports.

PEace.
