Giants Highest Paid Players on Playoff Hotseat

The Giants have until 10AM Thursday morning to decide upon the 25 player roster that will face the Atlanta Braves in the opening round of the 2010 divisional round playoffs.

Oddly enough, a strong case can be made to leave the Giants three highest paid players off of the postseason roster.

Barry Zito, Aaron Rowand and Edgar Renteria, whose combined contracts total over 200 million, have all struggled with consistency over the course of the regular season.

Zito appears to be in the most danger of losing a roster spot, as he has not won a game on the road since May 5th, and struggled with control in his final start, which would have clinched a playoff birth.

Rowand and Rentaria, who have both seen a reduction in playing time, may have a better chance at making the roster due to their sucess against the Braves pitching staff.

Rowand has the Giants best batting averages against Derrick Lowe and Tim Hudson, and could be a valuable spot starter or pinch hitter. Rentaria, who has good career stats against the Braves pitchers, will likely make the team because he is the only backup shortstop on the roster.
