The Inevitable Mike Singletary Firing

Since 2003, the 49ers have employed a revolving door of unsuccessful coordinators and coaches; from Dennis Erickson, the Lion in search of courage, to Mike Nolan, the Tin Man in search of heart, and now Mike Singletary, the scarecrow who only needed a brain.

Call it the curse of Steve Mariucci if you must, but the 49ers have not found the yellow-brick road back to the NFL playoffs since they fired "Mooch" in 2003, after a 10-5 season and playoff victory.

(And of course in this example Denise York is the Wicked Witch of the East, John York the Wicked Witch of the West and Jed York is the Wizard of Oz, belting out nonsense and false promises while hiding behind a glass screen.)

But before we we get carried away with off-the-wall analogies, (Alex Smith is the little munchkin that wears the golden cap and sabotage's everything btw;) and as Mike Singletary’s firing becomes a matter of when, not will; we as "49er Nation" need to reflect on what we have learned from the courageous and heart filled Mike Singletary, who only needed a brain.

Why exactly did he fail as a head coach?

He said all the right things, he seemed to make all the right moves, he motivated his team, worked them harder than ever before, even turned misfits into leaders.

How is it possible that all of these great things, got "rewarded" with an 0-5 record and an almost certain dismissal at the end of, or possibly during, this season?

It’s simple. The NFL is, now more than ever, an X and O's league. The Vince Lombardi’s, the Mike Ditka's and the Mike Singletary’s don’t stand a chance in this days NFL.

The master motivator has been replaced by the master tactician.

Take a look at the best coaches in the game today, Bill Beliechek, Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin.

These guys win because they are innovative game planers, detail driven masterminds, and ruthless, calculating decision makers. They win because they us these qualities to give their team’s the best chance to succeed week in and week out.

In today's highly skilled and complex NFL, you can’t overpower opponents anymore. You need to out strategize, to out maneuver and out coach.

NFL players don’t need motivation, inspiration from coaches, or drills to magically toughen them up; as Mike Singletary has famously done with the Nutcracker. Playing football is their profession. It is their job and their livelihood to get themselves ready to play week in and week out. If they can't handle that responsibility, they shouldn’t be on an NFL roster.

And this is what Coach Singletary dosen’t understand. This is why top offensive coordinators declined the opportunity to join his staff two years ago. Because Singletary coaches like he played. He tries to out work, out muscle and out intensify everything he comes across.

So for the 49ers (Dorothy) to find their way back home to the Super Bowl, (Kansas) they must find a coach that has more than just courage and heart. They need a coach smarter than Singletary, someone who already has a brain.

Because tapping their heels twice isnt going to get the 49ers out of this one.
