Oodles of Good Prospects at Number 7

Despite the hysteria on this very website about tanking the rest of the season in order to secure a high draft pick this spring, the 49ers find themselves in an enviable situation with pick number 7 in the 2011 NFL draft

In this draft, which is deep, the 49ers are guaranteed a high quality player. Additionally, with teams ahead of them desperate for specific needs and players like Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert shooting up the draft boards, the 49ers have a great opportunity to have a top five talent fall to them at number 7.

Here are 3 guys I am hoping to see in the red and gold next year, and three guys I'm not...

Von Miller- Texas AnM- 6'0 245

Pass Rush, Pass Rush, Pass Rush. The 49ers need it, this guys got it. Not only does the Division 1 sack leader have a thirst for quarterbacks he has the speed to get sideline to sideline in run defense and decent enough athletic ability to drop back in coverage. Think Manny Lawson 2.0 with the ability to get to the quarterback.

2- Pattrick Petterson- LSU- 6'2 210

Not to be confused with Patrick "PATTERSON" former Kentucky bball player and Houston Rockets draft pick, this guy IS A STUD!!! And no, I am not biased because I watched every one of his games for my beloved Tigers. Petterson is an absolute athletic freak along the lines of a corner backing version of  Michael Vick. Think Deion Sanders speed with Champ Bailey's size. Still needs some polish in his fundamentals, but his work ethic AND physical tools are undeniable.

3- Robert Quinn- UNC- Big and Tall

Would have been a top 3 pick had he not missed the entire season at UNC. Julius Peppers 2.0 off the edge, would be a steal for the 49ers as long as his charachter issues are not a concern.

Top three "Not That GUY!!!" picks:

1- Marcel Darius- Alabama

Already has shown immaturity after attending numerous parties with his agent.... while still in college. Didn't show up in big games this year for Alabama and also attended said Alabama University. (huge writer bias here)

2- Blaine Gabbert- Mizzou

Rule number one when looking at quarterback prospects: "Said Quarterback must be Accurate!" And dont even think about messing with rule number one. Every successful quarterback in the NFL shares one common characteristic, accuracy. So when "experts " start talking about how great Gabbert will be great, as long as he improves his accuracy, I start looking at other options. (Like Chris Ponder and Andy Dalton, but that conversation is for another time and another place.)

3- A.J Green- Georgia

No doubt AJ Green is an amazing talent. He had big games against the guy I think the 49ers should take in Patrick Petterson, so this is not a knock on AJ Green. Its just that championship teams are not built around wide recievers. Im sure many 49er fans will be enticed to put Green alongside Crabtree, but the reality is, wideouts are a dime a dozen in the NFL. Top ten picks are better off being used on rare positions like QB, OT, DT, DE, OLB and CB. (Notice I did not list RB, WR, OG, MLB, SS, FS, yet another conversation for another time and another place)
